Vehicle tracking via the internet

The new Aertrax™ system is an affordable, automatic vehicle locating (AVI) system that provides dependable tracking and locating services. Aertrax is designed to provide meaningful location information, very quickly. Aertrax is now operational across most of the U.S. and Canada. Aertrax units are programmed to transmit global positioning system (GPS) location data on a regular time basis, in response to a command, or a comshellation of both.

The Aertrax Resource Center converts this data into mapping that is instantly available over the internet from anywhere in the world. Aertrax service may be ordered today — and deployed tomorrow. Units are shipped ready to use. No dedicated hardware or software is required to operate its system. A standard PC or Mac with internet access is all that is required. With Aertrax, the operational fees are very affordable (about a dollar a day). No expensive receiving equipment is necessary (example: 2-way radio system or phone-in dispatcher), and virtually no operator training is required.

SYSTEMS INFORMATION

The Aertrax unit is completely self contained, about the size of a paperback novel and weighs about 1.5 lbs. Connections are provided for 12 vdc, utilizing the vehicle power. Includes comshellation antenna with GPS/cellular integrated into one antenna. Power requirements are minimal. Aertrax unit may remain in use for several weeks without loss of vehicle cranking power. Aertrax units may be installed with no technical training necessary. A desktop PC or laptop with internet access is all that is necessary to operate the system. A secure, password-protected homepage provides all operational tools on a single screen.

Numerous display options help transform the Aertrax system into a true asset management system. Clients may select graphics displays in the form of street-level maps, event list or plain-text histories. Entire fleets or a single vehicle may be displayed on a street-level map that also incorporates zoom in/zoom out capabilities. Simple “mouse clicks”, not keystrokes, are all that’s required in paging a single vehicle, a designated group of vehicles, or an entire fleet. Page responses will appear in the selected format in about a minute.

DATA TRANSMISSIONS

The heart of the Aertrax system is the new Cellemetry Data Service that provides a secure and dependable means of data transport. Short of direct satellite links, no other system enjoys a large operational “footprint” in both the U.S. and Canada. BellSouth anticipates all of the U.S. population will have access to this service by the end of 1999. The service is available now in most of the populated areas of Canada, through Bell Mobility. All transmissions are made at full legal power (up to three watts). The same bulletproof error correction system that the cellular company uses to preserve call billing data is utilized to transmit Aertrax messages.

SYSTEM BENEFITS

• The Aertrax system functions in a true telemetry environment, with none of the problems inherent to systems that use the cellular telephone voice channels or two way radios.
• The Aertrax messages are error-corrected; no data is lost due to weak or "scratchy" voice channel transmissions. The Aertrax messages get through even when the voice channels are "busy".
• The Aertrax system operates at maximum legal cellsite power at all times, in BOTH directions.
• The Aertrax system may be operated or monitored from anywhere in the world that telephone service is available. Very little training is necessary. Anyone who has “surfed the Web” already has 95% of the skills necessary to poll vehicles, generate map displays and access statistical information.
• Aertrax transmissions are very secure. Competitors cannot monitor data or interfere with the system. Unlike some cellular telephones, there is no risk of cloning.
